A color sheet-fed offset printing machine is a high-speed commercial press that reproduces multi-color images on individual sheets of paper rather than a continuous roll. Widely used for books, magazines, and packaging, it operates by transferring inked images from a metal plate to a rubber blanket, then onto the paper.
These presses are highly modular, consisting of distinct "units" lined up in a rowwith each unit dedicated to applying a single ink color.
How the Process Works
- Pre-press: Digital files are separated into the four primary printing colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK). Lasers etch these color separations onto thin metal plates.
- Plate Cylinder: The metal plate is mounted onto the plate cylinder, where water moistens the blank areas (repelling ink) and a specialized oil-based ink adheres only to the image areas.
- Blanket Cylinder: The inked image is offset (transferred) onto a flexible rubber blanket cylinder. This softens the impression and yields exceptionally sharp, consistent prints.
- Impression Cylinder: The paper is fed between the blanket cylinder and the impression cylinder, which presses the ink firmly onto the page
